Adobe rolls out new generative AI features to Illustrator and Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop gets new AI image generation AI features
Portrait retouching has benefited greatly from AI-based intelligence. One area that has been neglected in this technological revolution, however, is compositing. The GIP Digital Watch observatory reflects on a wide variety of themes and actors involved in global digital policy, curated by a dedicated team of experts from around the world.
Generative AI features came to Photoshop in 2023 with the introduction of Adobe Firefly in much of Adobe’s software. Photoshop received the bulk of generative AI tools, in the form of Generative Expand, Generative Fill, and Remove Distractions. Adobe is listening to feedback and making tweaks, but AI inconsistencies point toward a broader issue.

Fixing a photo or creating a graphic doesn’t always have to come with the price or learning curve of Photoshop. “Select the entire object/person, including its shadow, reflection, and any disconnected parts (such as a hand on someone else’s shoulder). Otherwise, the AI tries to rebuild the object based on what’s left behind. For example, if you select a person and miss their feet, Lightroom tries to rebuild a new person to fit the feet,” the article reads. The new AI features will be available in a stable release of the software “later this year”. The beta was released today alongside Photoshop 25.7, the new stable version of the software.

For those seeking more control, consider exploring tools like Stable Diffusion and ComfyUI. While they have a steeper learning curve and require a GPU with at least 6-8GB of VRAM, they can easily blow Photoshop out of the water. If you’re looking for something in-between, we know some great alternatives, and they’re even free, so you can save on Adobe’s steep subscription prices.
Generative Workspace offers four variations per prompt and can produce up to 20 variations, which is great for batch production. As with all of Adobe’s AI-generated imagery, the quality is second to none. Generative Workspace is using Adobe Firefly 3 during the beta, but by the time it is released for public use, Adobe may already be working on Firefly 4 or higher. Being able to access all your generated imagery from Adobe products in one place will make a world of difference in time efficiency and productivity.
I am particularly interested in how photography can help people express their creativity more effectively, or deal with mental health issues and other challenges. The updates to Adobe Lightroom were more low key at this year’s Adobe Max, mainly focussing on Quick Actions for the mobile and web versions of Lightroom (these are ‘early access’ features so you can expect further development). Here are some stunning features that will improve your Photoshop workflow.
Photoshop’s Generative AI turned this photo into a work of art –I’m impressed!

Adobe Photoshop offers versatile tools for various users, from professionals to hobbyists, photographers, designers, and artists. Its flexible and powerful features support tasks like portrait retouching, marketing material creation, web design, and photo enhancement. Another AI tool that builds on existing original content rather than creating something entirely from scratch is Adobe Firefly’s ability to turn a still image into a video.
Many educational institutions offer courses in Photoshop, making it accessible for students wanting to learn digital art, photography, and design. I started learning Photoshop at university and learned it on a deeper level with a three-month intensive graphic design course in New York City. With Photoshop, web designers can create buttons and icons or complete web page mockups. Its layering system and advanced typography tools allow designers to experiment with visual elements, resulting in aesthetically pleasing and functional designs. Whether you focus on concept art, matte painting, or photo editing, Photoshop offers the best tools to turn your ideas into reality.
As a result, hobbyists can use some of Photoshop’s simple tools to edit photos, remove blemishes, adjust colors, and create interesting effects without extensive training. Teachers use Photoshop’s features to demonstrate editing techniques and design concepts for a hands-on experience with professional software. Extensive tutorials, online courses, and community support facilitate learning. With that in mind, let’s use Generative Fill in the Photoshop public beta to expand a photograph beyond its bounds and add in additional objects.
Say you have an otherwise perfect shot that’s ruined by one person in the group looking away or a photobombing animal. Generative Remove will wipe the unwanted part, and then replicate the background. It’s smart enough to do all this without smudges, distortions, or dark spots. Each step in the creative process can be enhanced with generative AI in Adobe Photoshop. We give you the inside scoop on what companies are doing with generative AI, from regulatory shifts to practical deployments, so you can share insights for maximum ROI. Once again, in the video conference with VentureBeat, Adobe recommitted not to training on customer content unless it was uploaded to Adobe Stock.
When you need to move fast, the new Adobe Express app brings the best of these features together in an easy-to-use content creation tool. Another feature, Lens Blur, allows you to blur any part of a photo to create more professional-looking cityscapes, portraits, or street photography. If you have a photo you love but want to swap the background, the latest Photoshop update allows you to generate a replacement background that matches the lighting, shadows, and perspective of the subject in the forefront. Every content creator, solopreneur, side hustler, and freelance artist has hit roadblocks, maybe because of their skill level or perhaps a lack of time; it happens. When building a team isn’t possible, Adobe Firefly generative AI can help fill those gaps.
Ethical Concerns with Generative AI
Photoshop Elements includes a handful of AI tools, but not as many as the main version of the software. You can edit photos by using filters and effects, quick touch-ups, collages, resizing and recomposing images and elements, and adding text. The number of generative AI tools has grown significantly, almost to the point of market saturation, with new AI platforms and features appearing everywhere.
- I’d rather see them make these simple improvements to the user experience before getting an update with a new feature added.
- You can now design your own custom Gatorade Squeeze water bottle using Firefly’s text-to-image capabilities on Gatorade’s website.
- Adobe is aware of the issues and explains that, unlike non-AI tools, those powered by technology like Firefly, which is constantly being fine-tuned behind the scenes, are not continuously improving in every possible situation.
In the plugin, you simply select the application it should take the image from, type in how it should change it, and click Create. This approach stands out though thanks to the ability to use photographs, layers and more than just a quick drawing on a canvas. In the demo, Adobe’s designer took a photograph of a boring, empty room and gradually doodled on top to create a render. Objects on Path is rolling out alongside an enhanced version of Image Trace.
Adobe rolls out more generative AI features to Illustrator and Photoshop
It’s one of the best AI tools I could use, and it is not yet found in many other creative software programs that boast AI features. Previously available in the beta online app, the fully-fledged desktop version of Photoshop will now have a tool for generating a new background for an existing photo. The tool requires first using AI to remove the background first before generating a new one. A text prompt then tells the software what to generate in the background. Several of Photoshop’s existing AI tools are designed for tasks like eliminating power lines, garbage cans, and other distractions from the background of a photo.
For example, you can use Quick Actions to quickly edit a portrait — it will detect your subject, the background, and features to retouch like teeth, eyes, or skin. Quick Actions automatically create individual masks of each selected element to either enhance with available controls or refine further in the masking panel. It can also suggest the best presets to enhance your image in one tap. Quick Actions in Lightroom for mobile and web claims to speed up your edits by automatically creating masks based on the subject matter of your photo. Quick Actions will then suggest contextual edits and relevant tools, so it suits editing on-the-go or any time you need to make precise edits away from your computer. This is only one of the Quick Tools, but the menu offers plenty more, such as depth blur, smart fix, background tools, subject selection tools, and color options to name a handful.
Adobe continues to roll out more AI tools across its Creative Cloud family of apps with the announcement that Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop now have accelerated creative workflows that give users more control. And if you need a Mockup you can do that right inside Illustrator, too, and the system can even automatically manipulate the image to show you how it will look on the selected product. In a press briefing shared with Lifewire, Adobe announced a massive new update coming to Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, powered by the latest version of the company’s Firefly AI. These new features run the gamut from design to production, and all are designed to help reduce the amount of time creatives spend on the tedious details of their creations so they can spend more time on the creative part.
A few seconds later, Photoshop generated three variations of my photo! Those using the Photography plan benefit from a seamless workflow with Photoshop and Lightroom for organizing, editing, and retouching. Tools like Content-Aware Fill and advanced masking allow you to make precise changes, making Photoshop essential for perfecting portraits, landscapes, and product photography. I had so much fun creating different compositions, distorting text and images, and experimenting with textures with the different Blend modes.
- Users can augment the feature using a reference image, promising more realistic and accurate results with enhanced control.
- Magic Wand often picks up the wrong color sections or unanimously misses an entire arm, for example.
- Both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements can be accessed from a desktop app, web browser, or mobile app for the same major operating systems and platforms, but the cost is different for each.
These latest advancements mark another significant step in Adobe’s integration of generative AI into its creative suite. Since the launch of the first Firefly model in March 2023, Adobe has generated over 9 billion images with these tools, and that number is only expected to go up. This update integrates AI in a way that supports and amplifies human creativity, rather than replacing it. The company’s latest Firefly Vector AI model is at the heart of these enhancements, promising to significantly accelerate creative workflows for graphic designers, fashion designers, interior designers or professional creatives. Photoshop also supports the creation of animated graphics and GIFs, further expanding the possibilities for creating engaging content. Overall, its versatility and powerful editing tools make Photoshop an essential resource for content creators looking to elevate their visual storytelling and connect with their audience more effectively.
The similar “Generative Remove” tool is now widely available in Adobe’s other image processing platform, Lightroom, having been launched in beta earlier this year. Technology Magazine is the ‘Digital Community’ for the global technology industry. Technology Magazine focuses on technology news, key technology interviews, technology videos, the ‘Technology Podcast’ series along with an ever-expanding range of focused technology white papers and webinars. For its enterprise customers, Adobe also introduced GenStudio for Performance Marketing, an application within its broader GenStudio solution. This tool aims to optimise the content supply chain for marketing campaigns and personalised customer experiences.
So, for example, you may have a photo of a dog lying on grass, then select the option to remove the background and generate a beach surrounding. Adobe is also adding generative AI features to other apps in its portfolio, including Lightroom and the publishing package InDesign. As well as its usual Sneak Peeks, Adobe revealed new details of its Firefly Video model, creating videos from text or image prompts.
Of course, this claim is a bit of sleight of hand, because there would have been a huge amount of human effort involved in making the AI-generated imagery look consistent and polished and not like nauseating garbage. But that is still a promise of a deeply unedifying future – where the best a creative can hope for is a job polishing the computer’s turds. Adobe’s generative AI push has been much-publicised and much-criticised in recent years. The company is constantly updating and boasting about its Adobe Sensei and Adobe Firefly tools, which integrate generative AI technology comprehensively across the company’s suite of programs. With Adobe Firefly in Photoshop, you can use Generative Fill to expand an image beyond its borders, or use Generate Image to make something up wholesale.
The generative fill tool can be used to add backgrounds, add or remove objects in a picture, and even expand images. Once you get a taste of what this feature can do, you’ll use it regularly. The update also brings a new Dimension tool to Illustrator that automatically adds sizing information to your projects, and a Mockup feature that helps you visualize your designs on real-life objects. Retype is another nifty tool that converts static text in images into editable text. The noteworthy feature of Project Blend is a button labeled Harmonize. This AI-based technology modifies the lighting and color on the subject to match that of the background to which the subject has been added.
With Photoshop, content creators can manipulate images, apply filters, and create custom layouts that stand out in crowded feeds. Working with layers and masks provides flexibility in designing complex compositions and creative experimentation. It offers advanced tools for photo retouching, manipulation, and enhancement for pixel-level perfection in their images. With the Camera Raw plugin, photographers can gain complete control over RAW files, adjusting exposure, white balance, and more. There are around ten other AI tools available in Photoshop that I didn’t mention, many of which are still good tools.
